Faced with a hybrid learning program at Palm Beach County schools, Project UpLift worked to implement a distance-learning program to deliver its free, intensive, small group, after-school reading tutorial program taught by certified teachers from the students’ home schools in 2020-21. Roots and Wings is a recipient of hotspots and Chromebooks to facilitate remote learning through Connected Nation’s partnership with AT&T and the NBA valued at $200,406. As classroom learning has resumed this fall, the program has grown from serving 420 struggling 2nd and 3rd grade readers at 7 Title One Schools in 2019-2020 to 590 students at 8 schools in Delray Beach, Boynton Beach, and Boca Raton, inclusive of pilot programs for Grades 1 and 4. In cooperation with the KOP Mentoring Network, 30 Grade 4 Project UpLift students at Orchard View Elementary School are remaining on-site at the conclusion of their reading tutorial for a pilot program introducing the KOPMN Star Makers program, which focuses on enrichment in STEAM subject areas as well as lessons in civic engagement. In addition, Roots and Wings is fortunate to be one of six organizations chosen to participate in a Capacity Building Initiative funded and facilitated by the Children’s Services Council.

Provide Description of How Money Would be Spent (Max 200 words.) |
Project UpLift provides its free after-school reading tutorial at south PBC’s Title One schools as well as other public schools with large numbers of under-resourced children. Beneficiaries are disadvantaged Grade 1 through 4 students reading a level or more below grade level.
At each school, up to 30 students per grade participate in after school tutoring three days per week with their school’s certified teachers in small groups of ten or less. Teachers individualize instruction based on each child’s needs. The Project UpLift model enables teachers to address components not included in the regular school day, such as foundational phonics for students in grades two and three. Each student receives the tools they need to read proficiently. Project UpLift meets students where they are, rewards small gains, encourages incremental progress, and celebrates each child’s successes.
Currently, Project UpLift is being delivered for up to 590 students at eight schools. Grant monies would allow expansion of Project UpLift to address more students in need. Funds would cover certified teacher salaries, literacy coordinators, program support staff, resource materials, and incentives for Grade two and three students. Program cost per student is $500, so $100,000 would cover costs for 200 students.
