Significant Achievements in the Past Two Years (Max 200 words.) |
While others shut their doors during the pandemic, BGCPBC’s remained open to serve meals and provide a refuge for members and their families. As the pandemic progressed and schools remained closed, compromising parents’ ability to work, we offered a solution by providing a safe place for children to attend school virtually and enjoy fun enrichment programs until 7:00 p.m. When members were suffering from anxiety and depressive disorders, due to forced social distancing and isolation, we sprang to action by launching a new social-emotional learning department, so members did not needlessly suffer. When distance learning created an alarming achievement gap, our 110 certified teachers immediately offered academic support to ensure the impact would be short lived. BGCPBC finalized a three-year Great Futures 2020 strategic plan which is directly aligned with BGC of America's Great Futures 2025 plan. We have expanded from 13 Clubs to 17 Clubs in Palm Beach County; offering our 21st Century Community Learning Center programs at 16 Clubs (funded by US Dept. of Ed., passed through FL DOE). 14 Youth of the Year from teen-serving Clubs have received 4-year, Florida pre-paid college scholarships and 2 finalists have received 4-year university scholarships that include room and board. |
Provide Description of How Money Would be Spent (Max 200 words.) |
BGCPBC is requesting support for Career Bound?(CB) teen programming (technology tools, college tours, lessons, videos). Now in its?sixth?year,?CB?is designed to break the cycle of poverty,?improve the lives of families, and enable healthy community development.?CB?helps marginalized youth: graduate high school on time; identify career goals; develop capacities to submit competitive applications to post-secondary educational institutions and certificate-granting technical training centers; acquire job-readiness skills; increase developmental assets through service learning; and obtain gainful employment at?BGCPBC that?includes year-round training and coaching.? CB?employs a variety of learning opportunities to develop college and career readiness, while also helping to deepen parent/guardian understanding of the importance and attainability of a post-secondary degree.? Financial Planning Workshops for youth and their parents/guardians have fostered an awareness of the financial advantages of a college credential and realities of college tuition while assisting with scholarship and financial aid applications.? The program has awakened hope in members and families who despaired about the future.
BGCPBC combines foundational education, job readiness training, JR Staff employment in the Clubs,?character building through service?learning, positive youth development,?and career exploration. CB has dramatically improved teen skills, academic success, personal attributes, and experience required to be career ready. |
