In February 2019, the Norton Museum of Art unveiled a $100 million transformation designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Lord Norman Foster of Foster + Partners, which has bolstered the Museum’s status as a world-class destination for lovers of art and architecture. In the expansion’s first 12 months, the Norton welcomed more than 218,000 visitors, a record for the Museum, more than doubling previous averages. After the opening of its expansion, which represented the culmination of the previous strategic plan, the Norton launched a new strategic planning process. Conducted over nearly a year with the support of Chora, a leading museum consultancy firm, and with input from internal stakeholders at all levels as well as external stakeholders, the strategic plan was finalized in May 2020 and provides a roadmap for the Museum through 2025. In March 2020, the Norton closed its galleries to the public due to the global Covid-19 pandemic, shifting all programming online until the Norton reopened, with new safety protocols in place, in November 2020. The Museum continued its return to regular operations by opening six days a week starting Memorial Day 2021. The Museum has weathered the health and economic crises caused by Covid-19 with success, expects that operations will be relatively normal for 2021-2022, but remains prepared to respond as necessary as circumstances change. |

The Norton relies on generous funders to support the high-quality exhibitions and related programming that is enriching and engaging for all. Highlights for the 2022 season include:
Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Mexican Modernism: From the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Foundation (October 2021 – February 2022), a major traveling exhibition organized by MondoMostre, which brings together more than 150 works including Kahlo’s distinct self-portraits, drawings, and collage and Rivera’s celebrated oil paintings, works on paper, and photography
Frida and Me (August 13 – December 2021), a smaller-scale exhibition featuring works by Miriam Shapiro in the Museum Collection that explore her relationship to Kahlo
From Hassam to Wyeth: Gifts from Doris and Shouky Shaheen (December 2021 – March 2022), a first look at recent acquisitions by artists such as Andrew Wyeth, Jamie Wyeth, and William Glackens;
Dynamic, Squalid, Splendid: Themes of the City (June – November 2021), an exploration of the idea and appearance of the city, from the 17th century to the present, featuring urban scenes by John Marin, Piranesi, and others;
Saul Steinberg: A Writer Who Draws (November 2021 – March 2022), celebrating the cartoonist and illustrator best known for his work in The New Yorker
Each of these exhibitions will be accompanied by a wide range of educational programs, including a new high-profile lecture series funded by a major endowment gift, Art After Dark, school tours, family festivals, and more. The Norton will again host an artist-in-residence program in Museum-owned homes on the south border of its campus, and celebrate the addition of new names to Women's Walk outside these residences, recognizing great women artists.
